Bowery Creek Training Facility

The Bowery Creek Training Facility trains a wide range of audiences including:

  • Municipal, county and state highway personnel
  • Soil and Water Conservation District, NYS DEC, NYC DEP, WAS and other agency professionals
  • Construction contractors
  • Municipal and watershed planning staff, conservation NGOs
  • Landowners and other river corridor stakeholders

Let's be ready the next time!  The Bowery Creek Training Facility provides a regional and a watershed focus that meets the long-term training needs of communities and other river corridor stakeholders as they strive to be better prepared and resilient in the face of future flooding events.

Work with the stream, not against it!  The facility incorporates and promotes Natural Channel Design concepts into applicable curricular materials and provides a safe learning environment that includes facilities and resources that are conducive to all life-long learners.  Both classroom and outdoor hand-on resources are utilized.

Through programs offered at the Bowery Creek Training facility, participants will understand how natural river processes can be accommodated to minimize flooding impacts on infrastructure and be able to apply basic stream assessment measurements to flood response, recovery and restoration projects.  They will understand how to access technical assistance in an emergency stream intervention or use Stream Stats and reference reaches for channel sizing.  Hands-on operative skills that can be acquired include the ability to

  • install root wads, log vanes and stockpile large woody debris for future use in toewood structures
  • install rock vanes, crossvanes and rip rap revetments
  • to mitigate aquatic barriers and improve hydraulic capacity through culvert replacement

 Training Opportunities include:

  • Streams 101 - Learn stream processes and how to work with streams.
  • Post Flood Stream Intervention (Field and Classroom Sessions)
  • Culvert Capacity & Aquatic Connectivity - Measure, plan and learn about new installation methods and materials.
  • Dry Channel and Gravel Pit Learning Stations - Learn hands-on installation techniques with equipment
